Abstract: Hydrogen gas engines for marine ship applications will be developed by the three marine engine manufactures in Japan, Kawasaki Heavy Industry, Yanmar Power Technology and Japan Engine Corporation, under the financial support of Japan Green Innovation Program of New Energy Development Organization (NEDO). University of Hiroshima joins the project for conducting the fundamental research on the hydrogen jet behavior in the crossflow, which simulates the engine intake port injection of the hydrogen jet. High-speed video camera observation of the hydrogen jet in the crossflow was made with the regular Z type schlieren optical system to visualize the hydrogen jet from the lateral side. For visualizing the hydrogen jet from the bottom side, the background oriented schlieren (BOS) optical system was adopted. Effects of the crossflow velocity, hydrogen injection pressure, ambient pressure and hydrogen injection duration were investigated through the visualization experiments. The tip penetration, projection area and dispersion angle of the hydrogen jet were measured from the movie images.
